Some factors that determine your auto insurance premium.
The amount of coverage you buy and deductibles
In Nova Scotia, increasing coverage from the minimum $500,000 to $1,000,000 costs approximately $40 more per year. Higher deductibles can decrease your premium.
Your driving record
Logically, people with poor driving records pay higher premiums. However, if you have a small accident, you can expect at least a 20% increase in your premium. Your premium could double or your insurance might not be renewed at all if you get one or more impaired-driving convictions.
We now have coverage available to protect your good driving record in the event of an accident.
Your car model
The make or model of your vehicle also has an effect on your premiums. Some insurance companies are now using what is called CLEAR rating for automobiles. It rates the policy on the claims history for that type of vehicle rather than the driving record.
How you use your car
A car used for business costs more to insure because it is generally driven more and the chance of an accident is therefore greater. You will probably pay more if you commute a long distance one way to work. But you'll enjoy a reduction if your car is used solely for "pleasure." "Farm use" is cheapest of all.
